1. Indexing Services

Indexing Services is a program in windows that uses large amounts of physical memory and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are stored on your computer. So that when you do a search for any file on your computer; it will search faster by the index lists, if you don’t search something on your computer or rarely this system service is completely unnecessary for you. To disable this service:

• Click Start >> Settings >> Control Panel
• Open Add/Remove Programs and Click on Add/Remove Window Components
• Uncheck the Indexing services and Click Next

2. Folder Browsing

Have you noticed that whenever you open My Computer for browsing folders that there is a slight delay? That is why because Windows XP searches automatically for network files and printers when you open Windows Explorer. To fix it and to increase browsing speed:

• Open My Computer
• Click on Tools menu
• Click on Folder Options
• Click on the View tab.
• Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
• Click Apply
• Click OK
  
• Reboot Your Computer
  

3. Disable Performance Counters

Windows XP performing a monitor utility that monitors several areas of your computer performance, utilities takes up system resources so disabling is a good idea to get free system resources.

How to disable?

Install the Performance Counter List here.
Select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible Performance Counters’ window and clear ‘Performance Counters Enabled’ checkbox at the bottom.

4. Optimizing Pagefile

Pagefile a fixed size that saves the operating system from needing to resize the page file.

• Right click on My Computer and select Properties
• Go to Advanced tab
• Under Performance Choose Settings Button
• Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
• Highlight the drive containing your page file and make initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.
  

In Windows XP the page file about 1.5x amount of physical memory. This is good for systems with smaller memory like 512 MB, if you have more then 512MB change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

5. Display Settings

Windows XP looks great but all the visual items displaying wasting system resources. Here is a way to save system resource.

• Click Start >> Settings >> Control Panel
• Open System and click on Advance tab
• Go to Performance tab and click on Settings
• Leave only the following ticked;
  

• Show shadows under menus.
• Show shadows under mouse pointer.
• Show translucent selection rectangle.
• Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop.
• Use visual styles on windows and buttons.

6. Desktop Picture

Desktop background consumes some amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your computer, removing it will improve performance.

• Right click on Desktop and select Properties
• Select the Desktop tab
• Set the background to none.

Friend's here is a great tip to get your browsing speed up in windows XP. It will fix a bug in windows xp that installed default in windows XP or 2000, that scan schedule tasks. After apply it doesn't search for scheduled tasks anymore.

Click on Start and then Run. Type regedit and hit enter or click on OK

In registry edit window, find the entry located at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace

Under this section find the key: {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF} and delete it.
This will not require system reboot and you can determine yourself how much your speed improved.
